That coveted first page search engine ranking: we all want it, but it’s never been all that clear how to get it. Luckily, as a digital marketing agency, we do have a little bit of insight. Since it’s our job, we’ve gotten pretty good at isolating what works, and what doesn’t.

And for home improvement contractors, local SEO is the way to go.

Sure, you want to be on the first page of Google, but you can’t come up as the top result for absolutely every search relevant to home improvement contractors; that’s not plausible or even attainable.

So, how do you know what to rank for?

For starters, it’s important that you rank for search terms in your area. You only service in one general area as it is, so there’s no reason to try and rank for a generic term like home improvement contractor. The competition for that keyword alone is huge, and as a small to mid-sized business you won’t be able to compete with major companies that service multiple states.

Instead, you want to rank for your local service area. Say you work in West Michigan: it will be considerably more effective for you to rank highly for something like “West Michigan Home Improvement Contractor,” than it would be for you to rank for a generic term.

This is true for two reasons: 1). It’s way easier to rank highly for a long-tail keyword like the one above, since there’s generally less competition. It’s likely that you’ll be able to see some improvement in your rankings if your go for targeted keywords like this one. 2). You’ll be ranking for search terms that are highly targeted. That means the people who search for those terms are qualified leads: people who are both in your area, and looking to hire a home improvement contractor.

So now that we’ve defined why local SEO is important, let’s get to the how part. It’s all fine and good to say what you need to be ranking for, but you also have to be able to know how to do it.

That’s why we put together this Home Services Local SEO Checklist. It’s a step-by-step guide that will help you systematically go through your site and optimize it for local searches. When you implement the best practices outlined in the checklist, you’ll start to see improvements in:
